Caribbean Matters: Meet Afro-Colombian journalist Ilia Calderón, co-moderator of second GOP debate
The announcement that Emmy award-winning Afro-Colombian journalist Ilia Calderón will be one of the moderators of the upcoming GOP candidate debate on Sept. 27 has sparked a firestorm of pushback and poutrage from right-wing media outlets and MAGA adherents on social media. They are up in verbal arms and teeming with hate—all because the Univision anchor is not a member of the former president’s fatuous media fan club.
This is not the first rodeo for Calderón, the first Afro-Latina to anchor a major American network’s weekday evening news broadcast. She was also a moderator of a 2020 Democratic Party debate; she stepped in for Univision’s Jorge Ramos, who had been exposed to COVID-19. She also co-moderated a 2019 Democratic primary debate in California, alongside Ramos.
