We’re now getting into the latter part of our Election Night coverage, and here is where we stand:

  • It’s appearing like it will be an unambiguously bad night for Democrats in Virginia, where it looks like they will narrowly lose all three statewide offices, as well as control over the state’s lower chamber, the House of Delegates.
  • In New Jersey, Democratic Governor Phil Murphy leads Republican Jack Ciattarelli by a 51-49 margin. Which seems very narrow, until you realize that two of the best counties for Republicans in the state (Ocean and Monmouth) have reported significant returns, while the balance of the blue-leaning areas have not.
  • Democrats have already picked off a GOP-held mayoralty in St. Petersburg, FL, while maintaining their hold on the mayor’s office in Manchester, NH. In a surprising result, the write-in campaign for incumbent Mayor Byron Brown in Buffalo appears to be leading Democratic nominee India Walton, who won the Democratic primary over Brown in a huge upset earlier this year.

VIRGINIA: If there is a thin gold lining to what has largely been a “blech” night for Democrats in Virginia, it is this: the state Senate, in the middle of its four year cycle, was not up tonight. If, as trends indicate, the Democrats lose the Governor’s race and control over the House of Delegates, they will maintain a check on Glenn Youngkin and unchecked GOP power.

MINNEAPOLIS MAYOR: Incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey leads in early returns, and has a big enough lead to suggest that he will be fine in the instant runoff. Frey leads with 44%, well ahead of activist Sheila Nazad, who sits all the way back at 19%. Because Ilhan Omar endorsed both Nazad and state legislator Kate Kluth, one can assume that Kluth supporters will go to Nazad, and vice versa. The problem for these two challengers? Their combined vote is just 38%.

ALBUQUERQUE MAYOR: There are still some votes to be counted, but it looks like incumbent Democratic Mayor Tim Keller will beat back a challenge from two conservative challengers, most notably ConservaDem Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales. With 75,000 votes tallied, Keller leads with 59% of the vote. Gonzales is a distant second at 25%, with Republican Eddy Aragon at 16%.

CINCINNATI MAYOR: Democrat Aftab Pureval, last seen in a narrow loss against Steve Chabot for Congress, has won this all-Democratic race. His opponent, David Mann, just conceded the defeat.

OH-15: The AP has called this election, as expected, for Republican Mike Carey. He currently leads Democrat Allison Russo by a 58-42 margin, which is in line with 2020 presidential numbers (a two-point underperformance for the Democrats).

VIRGINIA HOUSE OF DELEGATES: A pretty important turn of events over the past hour. As the statewide races have tightened (don’t get too excited, all three Dems are still down by modest margins), several possible Democratic flips have been held by the Democratic incumbents. Democrats retaining a grip on the House of Delegates, in a twist that seemed inconceivable two hours ago, now seems entirely plausible.

ME-HD-86: Here is some good news for the Democrats. In a bellwether Republican-held state House seat in Maine, the Democrat (Raegan LaRochelle) not only won, she won by double digits. The Democrats flip this seat over Republican James Orr by a 56-44 margin.

NJ-Gov: There are still some real questions about what has been counted and what is left here, but two things are clear: (1) this is way closer than any poll indicated, and (2) Democrats definitely have a suburb problem. Right now, GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli has a 50-49 lead over incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. Now, it appears that most of what remains is heavily D-leaning, and as such, Murphy may still pull this off. But Phil Murphy won Bergen County by 15 points in 2017 and looks, at this moment, likely to lose the county tonight. The same is true of Gloucester County. Big red flags (pardon the pun) out of the Garden State, unless there’s something wonky with the absentee/VBM voting that’s not represented in that tally.

SEATTLE MAYOR: We’ve had the obligatory early mega-vote drop in King County, and it looks like Bruce Harrell is well on his way to being the next Mayor of Seattle in a Dem-on-Dem battle. Harrell currently leads Lorena Gonzalez by a 65-35 margin.

As we head towards midnight ET, we here at Daily Kos Elections are going to call it a night. The rationale: it seems unlikely that we will have a definitive answer in either the Virginia House of Delegates or the New Jersey Governor’s race in the balance of the evening. The closeness of one was expected, the other one…not so much. Of course, we will have updates Wednesday morning on all these developments and more. Onto the 2022 cycle…and have a great evening (or morning, depending on your locale).
